Impact of the Bedroom Tax in Swale

4 out of 5 people hit by the Bedroom Tax in Swale have been failed according to the Government’s own measures, according to information obtained by Cllr Mike Haywood

The Leader of the Labour Group Leader on Swale Borough Council said:

“According to information released to me by the Council, 40 people have applied and down-sized to smaller accommodation since the bedroom tax was introduced last year.”

“However, that’s out of 253 who have applied to downsize. It means that 4 out of 5 people who are already amongst the poorest in our borough have been failed. The Bedroom Tax hasn’t released more housing it’s just making the majority of people affected by it even poorer.”

Cllr Haywood continued:

“The Bedroom Tax was introduced by the Government on the assumption that people in social housing who were over-occupying their property would move out. This simply isn’t happening according to official statistics collected by Swale Council.”
