Dear Gordon Henderson MP,
The NHS is one of our greatest achievements and our most important institution. But it’s under threat from your government which puts privatisation before patient care.
Now more than ever we need action to save our NHS. That’s why I’m backing Labour MP Clive Efford’s Bill which would scrap the market framework that David Cameron has imposed on the health service.
The NHS has never been more vulnerable than under the present government. You voted for an unnecessary and damaging £3 billion NHS reorganisation; money which could have been spent on patient care where it was needed.
Your Government’s new competition rules force doctors to open up services to competition from the private sector, wasting millions on competition lawyers – money that could and should be spent on patient care.
In Sittingbourne and Sheppey we are seeing our local NHS struggling because of your government’s obsession with competition and the market. Our GP services are under resourced; we are paying for a failed contract to provide local patient transport services, we have a regional hospital that is struggling to cope with demand and Mental Health services that have spent millions on finding patient beds around the country instead of investing this money into our local service.
Labour will ensure that the NHS once again puts patients before profits. We will invest the millions of pounds saved from scrapping competition red tape in ensuring people can get a GP appointment within 48 hours, or on the same day if they need it.
I have no hesitation in backing this bill as it will make sure NHS patients in Sittingbourne and Sheppey are put first once again. Residents want to know what you will do. That’s why I’m challenging you to back the Bill and vote for it in Parliament.
Patients and their families in Sittingbourne and Sheppey are relying on you to do the right thing and vote for this Bill so we can put the right values back into the NHS. You’re fond of saying how you always put your constituents first; now it’s time you backed these words up with action by voting for this Bill.
