Sheerness Councillor and County Candidate Angela Harrison drew applause from party colleagues after an emotional attack on the Council’s scheme to reduce Council Tax support to poorer members of the local community.
Speaking at a Full Council meeting on Wednesday 9th January, she acknowledged that Council officers had done their best to deal with the mess handed down by an inept Tory Government but she said,
“This is a Tory attack on the poor. These are my people who will have to pay more Council tax whilst the rest of us enjoy a freeze. Across the country 800,000 poorer people are going to be penalised. The vast majority of these are hard working people working for low wages. This Government wants to drive a wedge between the poor and the rest of the community.
At the same time millionaires are going to receive a massive tax break. We are told by the Tories on this Council that the cut in Government support is necessary to cut the deficit. How is it, then, that a similar amount can be added to the grant from Government as a New Homes Bonus, to help the Tories’ friends in the building industry.”
