“HMP Elmley is so ‘seriously understaffed’ that it is jeopardising both Prison Officer safety and Prisoner rehabilitation, so says the HM Inspectorate of Prisons and to prove the point recent incidents in the Prison support this assessment.
The situation has become critical. I fully support our Prison Officers in their call for more resources to deal with the understaffing and the unacceptable working conditions they are being exposed to.
Prison Officers are putting their own personal safety on the line every time they go on shift, they are also unable to guarantee Prisoner safety neither support Prisoner rehabilitation programs.
Rehabilitation should sit at the heart of the Penal system. Prisoners on release should be ready to integrate into society and not pose a threat to our safety and well being.
This Government is playing with fire in its short sighted approach to the future of our Criminal Justice system. Recent comments from the Conservatives about support and recruitment are not being realised in our Prisons.
On a recent visit to the Sheppey Cluster the impact of understaffing on Officers and Prisoners at all three prisons, was discussed in detail at a round table I hosted between serving Prison Officers, Sadiq Khan MP the Shadow Justice Secretary, and senior officials from the Prison Officers Association.”
