Recent news showing that more than 400 SureStart children’s centres have closed since the Tory-led coalition came to power two and a half years ago is a big concern for parents in Sheerness says Sheerness East Councillor Mark Ellen.
The South East has seen the second highest number of closures of SureStart centres despite assurances from the Conservative Party at the last General Election that no such thing would happen.
Cllr. Mark Ellen says ‘The work the SureStart centres do in Sheerness is excellent but parents are rightly concerned that these services could be at risk. Sheerness Sure Start is and has been a fantastic facility for helping young parents, particularly first time mothers for support and guidance in the early years of parenthood. Myself and my fellow Sheerness Labour Councillors will therefore keep a close eye on the funding of these services to ensure they continue to operate well for our local community.’
